One Room Challenge - Week 1
The EarthenChic blog is about holistic design interests that encompass earth friendly & sustainable design, biophilia and wellness with a nod to ancient modalities. All good things!! I’d like to promote conserving our resources while at the same time inspiring and creating spaces that feel good to live in.
Homes today, more than ever, need to be a place that functions for us as well as speaks to our soul. I hope you’ll follow along on this journey and discover along with me how we can accomplish this goal together.
I’ve recently signed on as a guest designer on the Fall 2020 One Room Challenge. This is a biannual event that supports designers and enthusiasts alike to design and decorate one room in a 6 week turnaround. Last spring, I participated in the ORC as an Instagram Only participant where I completed a High Tech Home Office in a very unprecedented time. The result was a beautiful home office for an IT Specialist that functions with all the latest technologies.
This fall I’m aiming to refresh My Owner’s suite! I want a space that draws me into the room each and every day with a longing to retreat in peace and invite an intimate shared space for me and my husband. The room is currently a freshly painted, uncluttered space with a newly carpeted floor.
The goal for this challenge is to refresh this room using earth friendly furnishings, creating a harmonious, calm and intimate environment in this space.
The house was semi-custom built new, chosen from Ranch house plans from Don A. Gardner Architects. It was an older plan but I made many modifications to be economically efficient. I wanted a clean contemporary space without a lot of molding. In addition, I inserted a circular moon window to create a light and airy space. The cathedral ceiling lends itself to a lofty space as well. While my vintage furnishings have brought me many years of pleasure, there’s been very little updating over the years and they don’t seem to serve my husband and I functionally. It's definitely time for a refresh!!
While we are not sure we are in our ‘forever home’, I want to make sure the updates I make are “on trend” in today’s real estate market. Since This is the time of year that the Triangle Parade of Homes takes place in my area, I was recently able to tour some homes and draw some inspiration from some beautifully decorated models.
Over the next several weeks I will transform this much neglected bedroom into a beautiful serene Owner’s sanctuary. I’ll keep some of the room staples like an heirloom armoire, custom Vanguard platform bed and Possibly the antique side bed tables but There will be plenty to refurbish such as Drapery, bedding, rug, dresser, shelving and lounge seating.
whoosh….I’ve said it all this time!!
Check back next week to see how I’m progressing and follow along on my Insta for current going ons. Till next time then...
